Some Milestones

Potty Training

Makani recently received a gift from one of my best friends from college, Angela. The gift was not only for her, but for me as well--a potty!!! We have not been really adamant about potty training yet, but just wanted Makani to get used to it. At first she was afraid of it, until we showed her how it worked. Now, she loves sitting on it.

Last week after breakfast we did our usual routine and put Makani on the potty and read her a book. Before we knew it she went #1 and a little #2!

These are the pictures right after she went potty and got her 1st sticker!
I guess it's time for me to get serious about this "business"!

Nursery

I recently found out that my ward starts kids in nursery at 16 months old. So, last week we took Makani for the first time. I wasn't sure how she would do, but dropped her off and went to Sunday School. Christopher and I loved being able to pay attention and hold hands again (just like dating :), but right after class we both raced down to the nursery to check on Makani. Lucky for us our nursery has a peep hole, so we looked in and saw the cutest thing. The music girl was leading "Do As I'm Doing" and Makani was dancing, singing and trying to follow along. She LOVED nursery!

Yesterday we took her again. This time every child, with the exception of one, was screaming when we arrived. I wasn't sure how Makani would react this time. So, I took her to play with Cora (the only happy child) and left. I went back after Sunday School to "peep" again. . .just dancin' and singin' Makani. After church the nursery leader said she did great and discovered that Makani LOVES bubbles. I guess she wouldn't stop giggling when they blew bubbles. I am just thrilled that she LOVES to go. She really is a social butterfly!

Dumpster Diving

So, we didn't exactly have to get into a dumpster, but our neighbors put a table next to the dumpster for a couple of days. After realizing that nobody was coming for it, I asked my neighbors if they were throwing it away and if we could have it. Being given consent, Christopher was kind enough to hall the dirty thing into the house. This is a solid wood table that seats 6 and expands to seat 12. It was almost just like the one I grew up with, and it was FREE. I wanted it, but it was nasty! It had gum, mud, food, stamps, marker, etc. all over it. I thought it would be a great project for our family, so the project began. I even enlisted some help from my nephew as part of learning "work" in preschool! (Now before you call CPS on me, the kids only "worked" for about 5 minutes then ran off to play. . .and the nasty parts had already been cleaned. I just had them using brushes and water).
Makani originally started with the old cleaning toothbrush, until she tried to put that thing in her mouth. . .YUCK! I promptly switched the tools. What good helpers!

Christopher and I originally planned on staining it, but it was pretty scratched and hashed, and we have to create our own "leaf", so opted to paint it. We spent the weekend working on it, with some minor setbacks. Hopefully, we can get the top coat on and have the final pictures up in the next couple of days. I thought it was a great first project! Definitely not perfect, and some things we will do differently next time, but I plan to have many more projects in the future. I love the satisfaction of creating and working with your hands, especially when you get to see the end result!

1. Way to go potty training!!! Good luck! Hope everything goes smoothly
2. What a beautiful table! And I'm all about little ones helping with the tasks they enjoy doing anyway (Elena puts clean clothes on hangers! She loves it!)
3. Nursery at 16 months? That's a GREAT idea! Elena at 16 months was itching to go to Nursery - and then at 18 months when she was allowed, she went through a small bout of separation anxiety ... boo .. she got over it. she loves Nursery now
4. LOVE the vid! Thanks for posting! Do you think she'll still be doing that in a few weeks? Cuz I know this aunty who can't wait to get her hands on her :) :)

xoxo!
